Authorities Take Swift Action on Air Itam-Tun Dr LCE Expressway Bypass Project Dust Concerns

11 Aug 2024

In response to recent complaints from residents in Island Glades about dust pollution from the Air Itam-Tun Dr LCE Expressway bypass project, local authorities have conducted an urgent inspection of the site.

State Housing and Environment Committee Chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, along with Seri Delima Assemblyman Connie Tan and a team from the Department of Environment (DOE), visited the project to address the situation.

During the visit, Sundarajoo, known for his extensive experience in site inspections, engaged in a detailed discussion with the project contractor. He emphasized the importance of adhering to environmental guidelines and addressing residents' concerns regarding potential health risks.

The inspection revealed that insufficient water sprinkling at the construction site was a major contributor to the dust problem. Sundarajoo instructed the contractor to enhance their dust control measures, including increasing water sprinkling efforts. He assured that the well-being of the local residents would be a top priority, and stern actions would be taken if the issue persists.

At a press conference following the inspection, Sundarajoo highlighted that the contractor had shown cooperation and committed to implementing additional measures to mitigate the dust. He emphasized that the recent hot and windy weather had exacerbated the problem and advised the contractor to utilize the dust suppression system more effectively.

Sundarajoo also mandated that the contractor submit weekly progress reports to the DOE, with a possibility of transitioning to monthly reports. He indicated that he might conduct another site visit next week to ensure compliance.

Seri Delima Assemblyman Connie Tan expressed appreciation for the productive discussion and reassured residents of her commitment to addressing their concerns. She noted some improvements in the dust situation due to the contractor's recent efforts but hoped for further reduction in dust levels.

The authorities remain dedicated to resolving the dust issue and ensuring that the quality of life for residents in the affected neighborhood is maintained.
