The Penang state government is reconsidering the alignment of the new coastal road project between Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang. The revision aims to reduce risks to residents living in high-rise buildings along the route.
State Infrastructure and Transport Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari explained that the initial plan for the North Coastal Paired Road had the elevated road running through residential areas on both sides. To address safety and environmental concerns, a new alignment is being explored.
The revised plan includes a potential coastal route for part of the road, with an option to elevate a section above the sea. This change seeks to mitigate risks to residents, particularly after recent blasting incidents for another road project, which resulted in damage to nearby properties.
Zairil noted that while the overall alignment may not change significantly, the new proposal is designed to minimize disruptions. The review process includes a thorough cost analysis to ensure feasibility and safety.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has apologized to residents affected by the recent construction damage and confirmed that the contractor responsible for the Air Itam to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway road would cover the repair costs.
The coastal road, along with the Air Itam-Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu bypass, is part of a broader traffic dispersal plan. This plan also includes a third road, connecting Gurney Drive to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. This third road, nearly 4km long, will feature a combination of underground and elevated sections and is still under review.
The ultimate goal is to improve traffic flow and prepare for the proposed undersea tunnel linking Gurney Drive on Penang Island to Bagan Ajam in Butterworth.
