Silicon Island, formerly known as Penang South Island, will prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Forty percent of the reclaimed land will be allocated for infrastructure, open spaces, and blue-green corridors, promoting a sustainable environment. Around 700 acres will be dedicated to a Green Tech Park, aimed at attracting top global technology companies and creating high-income jobs in advanced industries.
The reclamation process is expected to be completed by 2032, with the overall development planned to span 25 years. Zairil emphasized that Silicon Island is set to significantly impact Penang’s economy, reminiscent of Bayan Lepas' transformation in the 1970s from an agricultural area into a leading industrial zone.
As Penang continues to be a key contributor to Malaysia’s exports, the state is committed to attracting high-quality investors to drive the next phase of industrial growth. This includes expanding research and development activities, integrated circuit (IC) design, and other advanced manufacturing processes on the island.
In addition to these industrial initiatives, Penang is also pushing forward with critical infrastructure projects, such as the Light Rail Transport (Mutiara Line) system, slated to be operational by 2030. These developments, along with the Penang Hill Cable Car Project, reflect Penang’s commitment to sustainable growth and its vision of becoming a leading economic hub in Malaysia.
